Ceiling Stars: Fiber Optics

Remember growing up and how cool glow in the dark stars were? You probably either had some yourself, or knew a friend that had their whole ceiling covered in them. Ahh, those were the days huh? Wrong! These are still the days! (and they are even cooler now!) Fiber optic lights can be installed in your ceiling to produce the star lite, night sky effect.

Adding a fiber optic ceiling to your home theater can enhance the feel and look of your beloved movie abode. But which kind should you use: single strand filament, or, fiber optic cables?

Here are the differences:

Neither single strand or cable fiber optics is better than the other. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages; most depend on what you are looking for.

  • Fiber optic cables are great because there is more order and control, protection and is easier to store. The disadvantages include: more time consuming because you must first cut away the protective cable, its more expensive and there will be more waste.
  • Single strand filaments are great because you save time since there is no protective cover. It is less expensive since it does not require bundling into a cable and there is less waste since each ‘star’ is threaded individually.

So what does this all really mean? When it comes down to it, fiber optic cables are best used for star ceilings that are installed in rooms with suspended ceilings because it is just easier to manage. Single strand filaments are best used for star ceilings that are installed in sheet rock, but keep in mind, this requires a lot of patience!
